She has received the National Award for Research in Social, Economic and Law Sciences Pascual Madoz (2002) and the Honoris Causa doctorate by the Universities of Valencia, Autonomous of Madrid and Granada.

A former president of the National Federation of Sociology and member of the Executive Committee of the International Sociological Association, she was the founder and director of the Women’s Studies Institute at the Autonomous University of Madrid and the UNESCO Chair “Equality Policies”.

Doctor in Political and Economic Sciences (specialization Political Sciences), she has been Professor of Sociology at the Faculty of Economic Sciences (University of Zaragoza) and at the Faculty of Economic Sciences (Autonomous University of Madrid). She has done research stays at the Institute for Social Research (University of Michigan), Spanish College in Paris, European Institute of Florence, University of Washington (Seattle), University of Cambridge, Pontificia Universidade Catolica, (Rio de Janeiro, Brasil), National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She has been Research Professor at the CSIC, where she has been director of the Socioeconomic Analysis and member of the Departments of Economics and Population. Currently she teaches postgraduate courses at several entities.

She is a consultor for the United Nations and has worked with UNESCO, World Health Organization, International Labour Organization, United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, United Nations Development Programme, UNFPA and UN Women.

She is member of the Consulting Commission of the Autonomous University of Madrid, Club of Rome (Spanish chapter), Commission of Experts for the Health Plan of the Valencian Community, Academy of Sciences of Malaga (correspondent), CSIC General Foundation (assessing commission on ageing), Assessing Commission of the Centre for Sociological Research, Assessing Commission of the Iberoamerican Union of Municipalities.

She has published more than two hundred works about unpaid work, use of time, health, women, inequality and urbanism. Among others, the books “Los costes invisibles de la enfermedad” (‘Invisible costs of illness’) (2003), “Si Aristóteles levantara la cabeza” (‘If Aristotle came back’) (2003), “El trabajo no remunerado en la economía global” (‘Unpaid work in the global economy’) (2012), “Las personas mayores en la economía del País Vasco” (‘Elderly people in the economy of the Basque Country’) (2014), and the recent articles “La otra economía española” (‘The other Spanish economy’) (2015), “La imposible neutralidad de la ciencia” (‘The impossible neutrality of Science’) (2016), “Alternativas metodológicas en la investigación sobre el cuidado” (‘Methodological alternatives in care research’) (2016) and “Los costes no sanitarios de las enfermedades crónicas” (‘Non-sanitary costs of chronic illness’) (2017). Soon to be published is her book “La riqueza invisible del cuidado: Innovaciones necesarias en el análisis económico y sociológico” (‘The invisible wealth of care: Necessary innovations in the economic and sociological analysis’).
