Scientific Output

Emeritus Research Professor on Social Sciences (Doctor Ad Honorem) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in the Institute of Public Goods and Polices (IPP). Member of the CSIC Research Group POSEB (Social Policies and Welfare State).

Ph.D. in Social Sciences (Politics) awarded by the University of Edinburgh. Managing Secretary of the Institute for Advanced Social Studies, which was the institutional precursor of the Unit for Comparative Politics and Policies and the ongoing IPP. He has been professor and researcher in several European and North American universities, and Jean Monnet Senior Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence. He is invited professor of several postgraduate courses.

As a political sociologist, two are his long-standing lines of comparative research: (a) Social policy and welfare state, and (b) Power and territorial politics. His scientific contributions have dealt with citizenship, collective identities, decentralization, Europeanization, federalism, multi-level governance, European Social Model, and welfare institutions and policies.

He has participated in more than 30 research projects awarded competitively by Spanish and European institutions. Recent books are: ‘Robotized democracies. US and EU: neo-feudalism and citizenship income? (2018), and ‘Behind closed doors. View son life changes during pandemic times’ (2021). They deal with the effects of digitalization automatization in our societies, as well as the ongoing related socio-economic transformations.

According to Google Scholar Citations his H-index is 62. He is the most cited Spanish sociologist and political scientists internationally. He has been awarded exceptional achievement in research by the Spanish National Agency for the Evaluation of Research Activity (36 years, maximum number of 6-year periods to be assessed).
