Dept. of History of Art and Heritage

Head of dept.: Idoia Murga Castro

The Department of Art History and Heritage, as a joint entity, is focused on the study of visual and material realities and the critical analysis of artistic production and reception over time. From traditional methodologies of the discipline to new approaches based on interdisciplinarity, its various projects generate knowledge about the visual and the material in relation to culture, society and history.

The research results are transferred to society through collaboration with museums and cultural institutions, management of artistic heritage, curating exhibitions, generating patents for heritage conservation, advising cultural and social organisations and collaboration with documentary and communication media, among others.

Currently, the Department of Art History and Heritage is made up of three research groups: Art History and Visual Culture; Nature, Territory and Cultural Imaginaries; and Material Culture and Heritage. Attached to the latter, the Heritage Conservation Laboratory (LACOPAT) also carries out its technical and instrumental support work. Besides, the CoreoLab (Choreological Laboratory, IH) supports the activity related to practice-as-research methodologies and research in arts of the Department.
